  • Ice

Description

We made this cocktail on Happy Hour Day (yes, that is actually a thing), but this cocktail is perfect for Cinco de Mayo or any day over 20 C degrees! Where did the term "happy hour" originate? And how did it spread across the world?

"Happy hour" can be traced back to the United States Navy where it referred to all periods of indulgence during World War I. As relates to drinking, it first made its appearance during prohibition in the US. The term referred to that time spent at a speakeasy before retiring to restaurants no longer able to serve alcohol (a truly happy time).

This quick and easy recipe will without a doubt bring you truly happy times as well. The bright tartness from the limes, the tangy freshness from the triple sec, and sweetness from the agave nectar blend into a perfectly-balanced cocktail.

Steps

  1. Rub the rim of a glass with a lime wedge and dip the rim in salt. Fill the glass with ice.
  2. Add the tequila (or mezcal if you're feeling frisky), triple sec and fresh lime juice to a mixing glass or jug with a few drops of agave nectar (syrup).
  3. For the adventurous: Add a dash of our Tomatillo Verde Sauce to the mix.
  4. Serve it on the rocks (with or without a salt rim) and finish with a slice of lime. Salud!

Author notes

The best thing about the 3-2-1 Agave Margarita - apart from its simplicity - is that you can get creative with your own variations. Feel like eating pineapple? Puree some fresh pineapple chunks and add as much as you want for your desired sweetness. Feeling smoky? Add some mezcal instead of tequila for a smokier taste. The possibilities are endless – and if you end up with a bit extra margarita, keep it in a mason jar to fill up the inevitable empty glass after a few minutes!
